HOUSTON — May 19, 2009 — Today Baby Holdings, Inc. announced its friendly acquisition of the goodwill and assets of ZoloWear, Inc.

ZoloWear
ZoloWear has been bringing mothers and babies together, beautifully, since 2001. Founded by babywearing guru Darien Wilson, ZoloWear specializes in unpadded, open-tailed ring slings in fashion-forward, custom prints and go-anywhere solids. ZoloWear slings adjust to six comfortable carrying positions. With a built-in nursing cover, ZoloWear slings are a great value, safely supporting babies from 5 to 40 lbs., newborn to preschooler.

i LOVE my zolowear sling. i've tried 3 or 4 other brands and this is my favorite. it lasts the longest in terms of using it on a newborn up to and beyond a toddler. you can discreetly breastfeed in it, which you can't do in all the others. the pocket is a fabulous touch, providing an excellent place for keys and credit card. you can wear your baby in a variety of positions, again, which not all the others do. and, the fabrics are gorgeous too. YEA zolowear!! this is a product i could not live without.

I just wanted to say, thank you so much! I just got my slings in the mail today and I love them!!! I had bought a whole bunch of different types of slings when my son was itty bitty, but we didn't end up getting them for almost 3 months. I wanted to try the ring slings for my second so I thought we should order ahead of time, we're not due until late August and me trying to be organized, you can imagine my surprise that we got them so soon. I didn't realise that I could wear a toddler in the slings as well. My son is now 17 months and approx 25-30 lbs. He's always been in a sling, though less and less now that he's walking. I put him in this one, it took us a few minutes to figure it out but he loved it! I've been using a soft structured carrier and have had nothing but issues getting David in and out of that carrier on my own. This one was so much simpler and there was very little strain once he was properly in place. Such a little trooper that one. Again I just wanted to say thanks, for the quick shipping, the DVD which is definitely helpful, and such an amazing product. I will definitely be getting lots of use out of these slings.

ZoloWear Baby Carriers, a leader in the baby wearing industry, is seeking an independent sales representative in the DC area.

Sales Representatives open new wholesale accounts, ranging from maternity and children's boutiques to lactation centers in hospitals. All orders are shipped from our office in Austin, TX. Reps do not sell to individuals.

Payment is commission plus cash bonuses for new accounts (signing bonuses). We have ongoing monthly sales contest with iPod prizes and much more.

Travel is encouraged. Local travel and cold calls are a must. Must be internet savvy with high-speed internet. Fax machines are helpful but not necessary. Sales experience is preferred. Sling experience is very helpful but not required.

Did you know it is possible to nurse and bowl a strike at the same time? It’s true… Thanks to your sling. Baby #2 lived happily in my sling for the first 4 or 5 months…She’s actually 2 now (and still use it on occasion in the hip position). I just looked on your website hoping to find the instructional video. And I did. I was able to watch exactly what I needed to know. We are taking a train adventure tomorrow and rather than bring a stroller, I decided a ride on my back would be easier, fun and new. Honestly, I rave about you slings to anyone who will listen. I did a lot of research on slings and after meeting a mom at the park and talking to Sara from Natures Mother in Leucadia, CA, I chose Zolowear. 1,002 uses for slings

Here is use 1,002 for a sling: wrapping a cat to give it medicine, so it won't scratch you. You could use a towel, but if you're like me, a sling is usually closer at hand than a towel, which is how I found the inspiration for this alternate sling purpose.

Shown below: our kitten, Laptop, lounging post-meds in the hibiscus organic cotton sling. I did not wear Laptop like a baby while giving his medicine, but wrapped him in the sling when it was not on me. Then I put him in like a baby, and he was most content.

Most miniature dogs, for example those that are sometimes seen riding in purses, love to ride in the sling. Many kitties don't care for the sling, but some cuddly kitties, like Laptop, really like it. Others might tolerate it briefly. For example, if your new sling arrives in the mail and baby is asleep, and you just can't wait to try it out. (You know what I mean...) You will find out pretty quickly if your cat is the sling type or not.

I just wanted to drop you a line saying how much I love your product! I've tried different ring slings before, and yours is by far the most attractive, sturdy, and user friendly sling I've worn.

I am constantly getting compliments on whichever one I'm wearing whenever I go out... since whatever shirt I'm wearing gets covered up by the babysling anyway, I've ordered a few more fabric options to give my wardrobe sore more variety. I even ordered the pink silk brocade option for my sister in law, who's expecting a girl. I know she'll love hers as much as I love mine.

I'm often approached by expecting mothers and grandmothers who are interested in the sling... I passed out about 40 business cards over the holidays just walking around doing my shopping.

Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to construct such a great product and make it available in so many different, lovely fabric choices. Being a mom can be an awfully unglamorous job, so it's always nice to feel pretty, even when you are covered in spit up. ;)

ZoloWear's Green Choice

I am very excited that ZoloWear has finally been able to switch to Green Choice energy. Now the energy for our office is clean and renewable. We're lucky to be in Austin and have this choice. When we sign up, it is more expensive, but the price is fixed until 2022. So after a few years, the regular customers' prices go up, but Green Choice customers prices stay the same. I have had Green Choice for years at my home, and my per kWh rate is lower than regular energy customers now.

Why didn't we sign ZoloWear up right away? Austin Energy only has a certain number of slots each year, because the infrastructure has to be expanded (wind turbines built, for example) before they can add more Green Choice customers. Once the slots are taken, customers have to wait a year before getting in line again. If you live in Austin, there are still slots for this year, so sign up while you can!

Today someone asked me why we don't have our slings made outside the US. It would be so much less expensive. True. This is not the first time I've heard this question, and it probably won't be the last, either.

So why don't we?

Producing our slings in the USA is important to us. We support our local economy and hopefully reduce our impact on global warming by not shipping around the world and back. Our slings are sewn right here in Austin, Texas, so we are able to keep a close eye on production. The hard-working people who sew our slings are like family to us. We like seeing their faces all the time, and holding their adorably chubby grandbaby.

With all the safety problems with China this year, buying baby carriers that are made in the US also helps our customers feel safer.

So, for a variety of reasons, we do not have any plans currently to produce outside the US.

Our goal has never been to be the cheapest, but to be the best. It means we have grown more slowly than some of our competitors, but we are growing something we are proud of.

When I became with-child I did a lot of research about . . .well, EVERYTHING. I was reading up on the best way to breastfeed, the best way to teach my child, the best school etc. One of the things I spent countless hours researching was a good carrier for my little one. Everyone gets a bjorn and I was ready to get that. . .until I read a couple of reviews talking about how the bjorn is great in the beginning when the baby weighs 10lbs and under, but after that it causes a lot of back pain.

So I started looking into slings. Man, seriously I was obsessed with finding the perfect one. Finally I went for the slings from Zolowear.

In the beginning it was tough to use. My little one liked to move a lot and didn't really like to be covered. So I rarely used it, causing a couple arguments with the husband because "why had you spent so much money on something you're never gonna use?"

But when she was at that age when I could start putting her on my hip, thats when the magic started.I always had trouble putting her to sleep as well as getting work around the house since she wanted to be carried all the time.

I put her on my hip and started some light dusting . . .10 minutes later she was sound asleep.

After that I use the sling all the time. She is now 25lbs and 14 months old and I use it to put her to sleep when shes teething and having a hard time putting herself to sleep. I use it when we go out and doesnt want to be in the stroller, which is almost always. The sling doesnt get in the way the way the stroller does. Its comfy and I can use it for awhile before I start getting tired.

Ive said "What would I do without the sling" countless amounts of time.

My husband now admits I made a smart decision in purchasing the sling. It's always a nice thing when your husband admits he was wrong and you were right : )

Sad about Solarveil

It is with a heavy heart that I share the news that Solarveil fabric is no longer going to be made. So the solarveil slings that we have in stock are the last ones we will have. I truly love this fabric and I'm so sad about this news! The fabric, which is made in the USA, is being discontinued because it is not profitable enough for the mill that makes it.

ABC News: Baby Gear Boom

ABC News has a story today about the Baby Gear Boom. The gist is that baby gear has become high-fashion at a high price, affordable to today's parents because they are waiting to have kids until they are older.

Things have definitely changed since I was expecting my first baby in late 1999/early 2000. I could only find one plain, black, purse-like diaper bag (by Kate Spade), and there were no "adult" looking prints. Most of the diaper bags available had baby prints like duckies or ABC.

When I went shopping for a sling at the local high-end maternity boutique, the only print available was Noah's Ark. There was one solid, chambray, so I bought that and wore it every day until I started making my own slings.

Seven years later, there are hundreds of options in both fashionable diaper bags and baby slings. The variety grows daily, as new parents are inspired and want to bring their own unique angle to fashionable baby gear.

The article asks who this is for, suggesting that there is something wrong with buying a high-end baby product for the parent. Yet that is exactly the hole that I found when I went shopping for my first baby gear. I carry the bag. I wear the sling. Those items are about me, because I wear them. Just because I had a baby didn't mean I suddenly want to wear Noah's Ark or duckies. Yes, my life was completely and forever changed, but that did not mean I suddenly stopped caring what I looked like.

Which diaper bag did I get, back in 1999? I chose a black backpack diaper bag from Land's End. Seven years later, that solidly-constructed backpack is still used occasionally. One thing I've learned is that I didn't really need a diaper bag at all. A plain backpack or large tote would have worked just fine.

Many of the high-end items available now only last a short time. So parents who are style-conscious on a budget have to decide where to save and where to spend.

A quality baby carrier is absolutely worth the cost. Slings are often worn every day for two to four years. (One person I know wore her petite child for FIVE years.) Many of our customers send photos of themselves wearing prints we haven't sold in years. Those slings are still in use with second or third children. Secondhand slings are passed on to friends or resold via consignment or online for a good portion of the original cost.

While vacationing in Boulder, Colorado last week, I met with some fellow babywearing enthusiasts/manufacturers. We had a lovely dinner together. We babywearing sling makers never run out of stuff to talk about!

Fabric Delivery

A Woman's Work Sling Workshop

This weekend I went to Houston to teach three sling workshops at A Woman's Work. It was great fun to help all the new parents get comfy in their slings. A Woman's Work is a lovely store in one of my favorite childhood spots, Rice Village. They carry a full inventory of ZoloWear slings, and they have pre-shrunk sample slings for trying on. All of the staff is friendly and highly educated about how to wear a sling.

i purchased your solar veil sling to use on our trip to israel. my daughter was 5.5 months old and our pediatrician advised us to be particularly diligent about keeping her out of direct sunlight at such an early age. also, both my husband and i spend a lot of time out doors during the summer and we wanted to have something that would keep her cool and protected from the sun.

while we were in israel, the sling was a hit. for a place that has sun all year round, they don't have carriers that provide protection from the sun like the solarveils do. everyone thought it was beautiful and loved that it was so functional. we gave everyone your website and even some of the wonderful baby boutiques that we love shopping at asked for it! (we hope you don't mind, but we gave them the website too!)

thank you for making such a great product, and most importantly, thank you for providing an instructional dvd along with it. it's so much easier to learn how to use it properly when you watch a visual demonstration rather that relying solely on an instruction pamphlet.

Photo Contest - March - Giraffes

We get a surprisingly high number of photos in front of Zoo animals, giraffes in particular. Something about giraffes makes people want to pull the cameras out, and our slings log a lot of zoo miles, so they're bound to end up together sometimes.

We really enjoyed the feedback about the java silk sling, below.

Here are some pictures of Evan (4 months) in his new sling during his first outing at the zoo. As you can see from the second picture, he's quite comfortable in the sling (and not so inspired by the animals). Mom's comfortable too. I usually walk a few miles each day with our dog. This is the third baby carrier I've tried, and I finally found one that works. Evan doesn't scream and my shoulders and back don't ache, even after a few hours. And, it's beautiful. Good work!

Why do ZoloWear slings cost more than some other baby carriers?

Since 2001, ZoloWear has crafted the finest baby carriers available. Our goal is not to be the cheapest, but the best. Our baby carriers have a detailed design, sturdy construction, and are made in the USA.

All ring slings have:

Lightweight yet sturdy aluminum rings. Each ring passes an impact test and a 250 pound pull test.

All silk and cotton ring slings have sturdy safety webbing.

Webbing holds the rings securely, so ZoloWear slings do not slip, even with a heavy toddler.
Similar to seat belt material, the webbing has been tested to 2,000+ pounds.
Two pieces are used for safety. If for any reason one piece of webbing fails, the other is there for backup.
Our webbing will not wear out and fray, where it wraps around the rings.
Using webbing means extra room in the rings for fabric, for easier adjustability.
Ends of web are heat sealed to avoid fraying, for both safety and cosmetic reasons.
Webbing is custom dyed to match fabric.

Design

Shoulder fold is designed to cup shoulder and spread across back without creating arm restriction.
Can be worn on either shoulder with no re-threading.
Multiple layers of fabric on shoulder distribute weight evenly with no bunching or pressure points on shoulder or top of arm.

Silk Brocade Ring Slings:

Top quality, heavy brocade.
Machine washable.
Sleek, sophisticated inset zippered pocket.
Topstitching around zipper and body of sling creates a polished look.

Cotton Ring Slings:

Edges finished with a morrow hem, similar to the tight stitching on a napkin edge. This finish is used so the fabric will have a bit of give on the backs of baby’s legs, and so the edges will slip through the rings more easily. This finish is used instead of a turned and hemmed edge, which causes red marks on baby's legs and does not look good on the back of the fabric, which shows on the tail.
Custom prints and custom-dyed solids in highest-quality, easy-to-adjust stretch cotton sateen.
Zippered pocket with strong, durable zipper.
Easy wash and wear.

Solarveil Ring Sling:

Solarveil is a lightweight, breathable sun protective fabric.

Pocket has strong, durable zippered closure.

Adjustable pouch

recycling with Furniture Partner

At ZoloWear, we do our best to look out for the planet. We print on recycled paper, and we're always looking for ways to reduce paper around the office. We recycle most of the trash in our office, even though our building doesn't have recycling pick-up. Sometimes doing the right thing takes a bit more effort, but it's well worth it.

Another way we recycle is by buying secondhand items whenever we can. Our friends at Austin's Furniture Partner make it easy to get great secondhand office furniture with plenty of life left in it. Tommy Branch, the warehouse manager, is always helpful and willing to go way out of his way to find the perfect metro shelving for us.

Last week we got two awesome metal mail carts that made Cathy and Dana do a little happy dance. (This involved Dana taking a ride in the cart.)

Ironing a silk

Question:
I'm getting ready to iron my silk/brocade Zolo, and wanted to make sure I've got my iron on the right setting. I've read all of the information about making sure it's a bit damp and to stretch as I iron to get the brocade back to normal, but am wondering how hot I should set the iron (the silk setting didn't seem to do too much, but wanted to make sure before turning up the heat!).

Answer:
I have found that the best way to iron silk brocade is with a fairly hot iron (closer to the cotton setting than the silk setting), moving quickly to avoid burning, and pulling the fabric as I go. The movement is similar to polishing, and if done correctly, it will restore much of the shine lost from washing. Using a spray bottle and/or ironing while the sling is damp from the wash is helpful as well.

Ironing a silk is a hassle, but it's worth it. A washed, ironed silk is absolutely stunningly soft and yummy.

And thankfully you won't need to wash and iron it often. Minor spills like spit-up wipe off. Unless you spill something big on it, expect to wash it about as often as you would clean a winter coat.

Pouch questions

Question:
Are your adjustable pouches double layered and are they supportive enough for a toddler?

Answer:
Our pouches are made with a single layer of stretch cotton. We like single layer pouches because they are cooler in the Texas heat. They are also very compact to stash in the car or diaper bag.

ZoloWear pouches have been strength tested to 150 lbs. I have carried my toddler in a ZoloWear pouch many times. I like ring slings and pouches for toddlers, because they are quick to get the toddler in and out during all those "pick me up/put me down/pick me up" days. However, if I was planning to wear a toddler on a very long hike, I would choose a two-shoulder back carrier over a ring sling or pouch.

Sizing

Question:

I know you have a size chart, but just to make sure before I order.....I am 5' 4" and typically about 120-125 lbs. Should i go w/ x-small or small?

Answer:

We receive more questions about sizing than anything else. According to the sizing chart, the woman with this question should wear an extra small according to our size chart.

In a pouch, I would err on the smaller side, because a too-big pouch can be really uncomfortable and pull on your lower back.

Ring slings are more forgiving, but I err on the bigger side with a ring sling. You can tighten a ring sling as much as you need to, and the extra tail can be useful.

That said, my preference for tail length is for the tail to hit right at the top of the leg. Why? Because the pocket is in just the right spot when the tail is that long. If the tail is shorter, the pocket can get caught in the rings. If the tail is much longer, once I load the pocket up with my keys, wallet, sunglasses and cell phone, it swings like a big pendulum and knocks into my leg when I walk.

The woman above could probably get away with a small ring sling, because she's close to the dividing line between sizes. However, sizing also depends on anatomy. The size chart is for people with average proportions. If the wearer has very large breasts, which many postpartum moms do, then she would err on the larger side when choosing a sling. If the person is more pear-shaped, a smaller sling might fit better.

This is why measuring is really ideal for the perfect fit. We have a video on our website for how to measure for the sling. This is the most accurate way to get the best fit.
